The parishioners of Cleveland’s St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church celebrated its 125th anniversary on October 15, 2017. The mass was celebrated by the Cleveland Diocese new bishop, the Rev. Nelson Perez. Concelebrating were Auxiliary Bishop Roger Gries, St. Elizabeth pastor Fr. Andras Antal, Fr. Andras Mezei from St. Emeric Church, and Fr. Barnabas Kiss from Holy Cross Church in Detroit amongst others.
Guests representing the government of the Republic of Hungary included from the Prime Minister’s Office Deputy State Secretary Dr. Peter Szilagyi and Hungary’s Consul General in Chicago Dr. Zita Bencsik. The mass was followed by a banquet in the church hall. Before the luncheon Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson congratulated the guests on the occasion of the anniversary and presented Fr. Antal a proclamation from the city. Fr. Antal has served nearly 30 years at St. Elizabeth and we congratulate him and his parishioners on their church’s, the first Hungarian Roman Catholic Church established in North America, 125 years!
